A Newfoundland woman who wrote hundreds of thousands of letters of support to Canadian troops overseas died Wednesday.
Gladys Osmond, of Springdale, N.L., was 91.
Osmond was such a supporter of the Canadian Forces, Gen. Tom Lawson, chief of defence staff, issued a statement of condolence.
"Her letters provided inspirational messages, strength and heartfelt support to the thousands of soldiers, sailors and aviators who received them," Lawson said.
"Simply put, she showed us that Canadians truly cared and her words were known to lift spirits and bring smiles to faces around the world, even on the darkest of days."
Osmond started writing the letters in the early 1980s, but as a child during the Second World War she sent knit items to soldiers overseas, she said in a 2011 interview.
In the interview with Saltscapes magazine, Osmond spoke about writing some letters by hand and others on the computer.
She said she intended to send the letters as long as her body would allow.
"I've made (Canadian soldiers) a promise. As long as I have the use of my eyes, the use of my hands and my brain still works, I'll write to them 'til they all come home," she said.
In 2006, she received the Canadian Forces Medallion Distinguished Service and was given the Order of Newfoundland in 2009.
In 2008, a book titled Dear Gladys compiled her letters and the replies from soldiers.
"I was moved to hear that members of the Canadian Armed Forces were with Ms. Osmond in her final moments, and I hope her family and friends know that we in uniform will not forget her legacy of service," Lawson said.
"She will forever hold a special place in the hearts and memories of those touched by her thoughtfulness."
