Nine cars of a westbound Canadian National freight train derailed in downtown Winnipeg around 5 p.m. Wednesday, CN reported.
The derailment took place behind the Federal Building, which is at the southeast corner of Main Street and William Stephenson Way.
In a statement, CN said the cars remained upright and there were no leaks or injuries. It said the only loaded cars contained sand, and two derailed tank cars were empty.
CN said the train originated in Winnipeg and was inspected before departure. CN initiated its initial response plan.
The Winnipeg Police Service, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service and the city's emergency preparedness co-ordinator arrived on-scene beginning at 5:12 p.m. They were clear from the scene by about 5:40 p.m. William Stephenson Way and Pioneer Avenue were closed for a short time but later reopened, the city reported.
The cause of the derailment is under investigation.
