Slip and fall from Joffre Peak Whistler-Pemberton RCMP Staff-Sgt. Steve LeClair said that a man and a woman in their mid-thirties and a woman in her late twenties, all died together. The two older climbers were from the Lower Mainland and the younger climber is believed to have been visiting from Germany. "It appears that it was a tragic slip-and-fall accident," Staff-Sgt LeClair told a news conference Monday. "They were all wearing harnesses and were roped together. One of the parties detached from the others and that person was found last night by one member of the party skiing in the area." Saturday night a party of five stayed at a cabin at a the bottom of a glacier called Keith's Hut in Joffre Lakes Provincial Park near Pemberton, about a 2 hour drive from Vancouver. The following day two went skiing, three went ice-climbing. When the ice-climbers did not return at the appointed time the skiers searched for them. One of the skiers was the husband of one of the climbers and during the search he found his own wife, deceased. Climbers fell 600 metres It was nine in the evening by the time he found her body and the two skiers hiked back to alert the RCMP. The climbers were near the top of Joffre Peak (8900 ft / 2713 m) when the accident occurred. Searchers went up by helicopter Monday morning and found their bodies within 40 metres of one another. "It appears they were boot-packing up in snow," Staff-Sgt. LeClair said. "It's very steep terrain and you'd need strong technical climbing skills and be very experienced in backcountry travel." There was no avalanche in the area at the time and weather is not considered to have been a factor in the tragedy. The identities of the climbers are not being released until notification of next-of-kin.
