When Madison Tevlin's parents uploaded a video of their daughter belting out John Legend's "All of Me" to Facebook, they expected it to reach friends and family, nothing more.
But the passionate performance delivered by 13-year-old Madison, who was born with Down syndrome, has touched a lot of people. The video went viral — its success accelerated by a tweet from Ashton Kutcher — and has now been watched more than 4 million times.
Madison, who has been working with a vocal coach for over a year and trains once a week, is beating the odds against those with Down syndrome, who have an especially hard time singing because of low muscle tone, as well as issues with short-term and long-term memory, explains her father, Matthew.
"Madison can do almost anything," he told the Star. "The question is just one of repetition.
"The same thing you and I need 10 times to [remember], she might need 100 or maybe more."
When Madison's vocal coach offered her a chance to record a video of her singing, "All of Me" was an obvious choice. The final recording came after months of preparation and practice, says Madison's mom, Grace.
"We practised until I knew the song by heart," Madison says, adding that the song means a lot to her.
"All I think when I sing, I think about my family," she says.
The video quickly exploded after Matthew uploaded it for friends and family to watch. After a few days, he was shocked to see the view count was climbing by 50,000 an hour. It's a number Madison is particularly proud of.
Most of the comments have been overwhelmingly positive and heartwarming; it appears Madison has touched and inspired other families of children with special needs to "go out and do more for their children, because there are no bounds," Matthew says.
The video has also attracted a few negative comments, however, which reveal to Matthew and Grace just how important it is "to reach out and dispel these myths out there about the limitations of people with special needs."
"This video shows that if you allow these individuals to do the things they can do, facilitate instead of putting them in the corner, they can achieve all kinds of things and be a real positive influence on society," Matthew adds.
Madison also thinks her video can inspire others to build confidence and take risks.
"I want them to know that if you believe in yourself, you should do this," she says.
Clearly a natural in the spotlight, Madison, who plans to continue singing and making videos, is almost used to her newfound celebrity status.
"This morning, she got up and was like, 'Mom do I have any interviews today?'" Grace says, chuckling. "I was like, 'Seriously? Just get dressed and go to school.'"
