One man is in hospital with a serious leg injury and a second man escaped with minor injuries after two small aircraft collided mid-air near Bashaw Sunday.

At 11:30 a.m., Bashaw RCMP responded to an aircraft collision 10 km northwest of Bashaw.

According to RCMP, two home-built kit aircrafts were flying parallel to each other on a route from Carstairs to Red Deer when the planes collided midair.

One of the planes crashed in a field off of Township Road 424 and Range Road 221 while the other managed to land safely.

Leg injury

One of the pilots, a 47-year-old man was transported by STARS air ambulance to the University of Alberta Hospital with a serious leg injury, the other pilot was treated on scene for minor injuries.

The case is now being investigated by Transport Canada.

Bashaw is about 130 km south of Edmonton.
