New Delhi: Miffed over the visit of of a Delhi Police official to the party office here seeking details of Rahul Gandhi's physical appearance, the Congress on Saturday said that the party will take up the issue in Parliament.
The Delhi Police, however, said it was a routine security enquiry. As the news surfaced, the Ministry of Home Affairs asked for a report from the Delhi Police in this regard.
Talking to reporters, Congress spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi alleged political espionage behind Delhi Police making "unwarranted and weird enquiries" about Gandhi.
Taking a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was once embroiled in a controversy over allegedly ordering illegal monitoring of a young woman in Gujarat in 2009 by senior police officials, Singh said: "This kind of snooping, surveillance and intrusion in political opponent's life may be Gujarat model but not Indian model".
Talking about the recent controversy, Singhvi said a few days ago, Shamsher Singh, an Assistant Sub-Inspector, Delhi Police, was found snooping near the residence of the Congress vice president.
"(The) ASI was trying to fill up a pro forma under which he was trying to gather information about Mr Rahul Gandhi".
He further demanded an explanation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh on the issue.
Earlier in the day, Congress leader PC Chacko said intruding into Gandhi's privacy by police is highly objectionable. The Congress is now planning to lodge a complaint in this regard.
According to reports, the ASI asked about party Gandhi's physical appearance - his height, colour of eyes and hair.
Talking to Zee Media, the Delhi police, however, said it was a routine security enquiry.
Police said such surveys are conducted at all protected persons' offices from time to time and no personal questions were asked.
The Congress, agitated over Delhi Police's 'intrusive' visit to the party office, has demanded a statement from the government on the issue.
Notably, Gandhi is on "leave of introspection", which he extended this week.
As per some party functionaries, the Congress vice president was likely to return near the end of first half of Budget Session that concludes March 20.
Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala had said at the start of Budget Session on February 23 that "Gandhi has gone on two weeks" leave, leading to speculation that he will return around March 10.
A party functionary said that some appointments of party chiefs in states could be made in the next few days and Gandhi will return after that.
The party had said that Gandhi had requested for "some time to reflect on recent events and the future course for the party".
Since the party's drubbing in the Lok Sabha elections last year and its defeat in subsequent Assembly polls, Gandhi has held wide interactions with party leaders.
There is speculation in the party that Gandhi could be made the party chief during the All India Congress Committee (AICC) session likely to be held in the middle of April.
