NDP the voice of reason in shameful display at Queen's Park - Sarnia Observer

TORONTO -

So now according to our fearless leader, if you dare raise questions about the proposed new sex-ed curriculum you're "homophobic."

And if you dare disagree with this scandal-plagued government, you'll be mocked and pilloried for your views.

In a ploy to deflect attention from the disgraceful allegations about corruption in the Sudbury byelection, the Liberals put on a childish show of ridiculing a Tory MPP for his religious views.

Chatham-Kent-Essex MPP Rick Nicholls, said this week he doesn't believe in evolution.

So Thursday Liberals held up National Geographic magazines with the cover, "War on Science."

If you're going to go down that road, why not make fun of all religious groups?

Why not pick on Catholics?

I can name several Liberals who stand up in the legislature at prayer time and say, "Our Father Who Art in Heaven."

How scientific is that? How do they know He's there? Have they looked up and seen him?

One of Wynne's own backbenchers came in on Ash Wednesday with an ash cross on his head.

I didn't hear them laughing at him. Nor should they.

Religion is a personal thing and we should respect the freedom of folk to worship anything any way they want.

Watch out for the faith police in Kathleen Wynne's Brave New Ontario.

All this happened as Liberals were giving Barbara Hall two standing ovations for her work as Human Rights Commissioner.

Shouldn't Hall have defended Nicholls' human right to believe whatever he wants to without fear or harassment?

This was a disgraceful display by a government that's under so many investigations on so many fronts, its cabinet ministers should hang their heads in shame.

To her credit, NDP leader Andrea Horwath called the government hypocrisy spot on. It's "disgusting," she said.

"Every day I come here and this government and this premier reaches a new low," Horwath said.

"Everything they've done is beneath the office of the premier and beneath the government," she said.

Now Wynne's calling anyone who opposes the sex-ed curriculum homophobic.

We should all feel sorry for her. She's a victim because nasty folk are picking on her because she's gay.

She told a Canadian Press reporter that homophobia, "is part of the motivating drive behind some of the protests."

Nonsense. Talk about muzzling free speech. So much for healthy debate.

The Tories have only themselves to blame for this shift in focus.

Lambton-Kent-Middlesex MPP Monte McNaughton and his leadership aspirations have them tied in knots.

He fell head-first into the trap set by the Liberals.

Why did they roll out the new curriculum on Monday? To deflect from the allegations of disgraceful behaviour by Liberals in the Sudbury byelection.

In response to Education Minister Liz Sandals' news conference, McNaughton — who's not even the Tory education critic — said Wynne had no right to tell parents what's right for their children.

"It's not the premier of Ontario's job — especially Kathleen Wynne — to tell parents what's age-appropriate for their children," McNaughton told reporters.

That comment certainly raised my eyebrows, but I assumed McNaughton was saying voters have lost trust in a scandal-plagued government. I assumed he'd set the record straight in no uncertain terms.

His response to that was astounding.

Instead of clarifying his remarks by saying he absolutely was not talking about her sexual orientation and was referring to the Liberals' losing the moral high ground with all the OPP investigations, he dug himself in deeper.

"That's ridiculous," he said. "For any premier, for any fellow legislator to accuse another legislator of that is an absolute disgrace."

He's not ready for prime time. His leadership ambitions are dead in the water.

This place is shambolic. The government has no credibility because it's mired in so many scandals. The Tories are distracted with their leadership race.

When the NDP is the voice of reason, you just know this will end in tears.
