TTC fare hike rolls out, but not all riders are irked - Toronto Star

A TTC fare hike that rolled out Sunday is dividing Toronto commuters.

Some say the TTC should make its services more efficient before hiking up its prices — while others say the system works well and they are happy to pay extra.

In January, Mayor John Tory and TTC chair Josh Colle announced the price of tokens, day passes and Metropasses would rise on March 1.

The price of a single token increased by 10 cents, up to $2.80.

Adult monthly Metropasses climbed almost $8 — to $141.50.

However, the cash fare remains at $3 and children 12 or younger are now able to ride free.

The last TTC fare increase was New Year's Day 2014, when the cost of a token was boosted by five cents and an adult monthly Metropass fare increased by $5.25.

Five commuters spoke to The Star about the latest hike in Union Station Sunday morning.

  • Katie Mundell, 30, market researcher:

"I'm not happy about it. Now the tokens are $2.80 and that's not a lot of difference to the $3 cash fare so there's no loyalty. It might be free for kids, but that's no benefit to me. I'm a daily commuter and I see no benefit."

  • Stephen Sheppard, 53, high school teacher:

"I actually am all for it. I'm surprised it hasn't gone up before this when you look at what people get in other areas. Commuters in Toronto are incredibly fortunate and they should be grateful. I love taking the TTC."

  • Haley Midgett, 23, student:

"Generally the TTC is a bit of a letdown when it comes to transportation in Toronto. I don't mind paying the increase, but I think they should have made it a better and more efficient service beforehand."

  • Rahul Sharma, 35, banker:

"I'm not worried about the increase of the individual fare for adults — I have two kids so they can ride free now. I am going to save some money and I don't have to waste time buying a shared ticket anymore."

  • Larry Lamarche, 64, retired:

"It shouldn't be increasing because I find their service isn't that great, like the lack of transport options for people who work on a Sunday morning. For the service that they provide the increase is not warranted."

TTC: A cash fare is $3 and an adult monthly pass is $141.50.

Brampton Transit: A cash fare is $3.75 and an adult monthly pass is $118.

York Region Transit: An adult cash fare is $4 and a monthly pass is $132.

Durham Region Transit: An adult cash fare is $3.25 and a monthly pass is $106.
