Two New Brunswick boys killed by a snake died from asphyxiation, according to preliminary autopsy results released Wednesday.

Noah Barthe, four, and brother Connor Barthe, six, were found dead in a Campbellton, N.B. apartment on Monday. A large African rock python that escaped its enclosure is being blamed for the deaths.

The 4.3-metre long python apparently got out through a hole in its enclosure, went into the ventilation system and then fell into the living room where the boys were sleeping. The apartment was above Reptile Ocean Inc., an exotic pet store.

The hodgepodge of regulations governing exotic pets in Canada is under scrutiny after two boys were killed by a large python in Campbellton, New Brunswick.

According to a family member, the boys had been at a farm earlier in the day where they had played with animals a python would typically consider prey. There has been speculation the lingering scent on the boys could have caused the python to mistake them for food.

"While we now have some preliminary information, investigators still have to wait for other test results to come back and for the final report," said Sgt. Alain Tremblay, of the New Brunswick RCMP, in a statement.

"We recognize that this has touched the hearts of people across the world and that people want to know how this could have happened. Our investigators are looking at all aspects of this tragic incident, and that will take some time."

Preliminary necropsy results on the snake, which was put down by a veterinarian, showed the creature was "overall in good health," according to RCMP.

The deaths have prompted calls for a review of exotic animal laws. Jean-Claude Savoie, who owned the pet store and python, did not have a license for the snake.

Reptile Ocean and the apartment above remain closed as police investigate. A vigil will be held Wednesday evening in Campbellton for the victims.
