OTTAWA - A conservative women's group is accusing Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird of abusing his position as a cabinet minister in defence of gay rights.
In an exclusive interview with The Canadian Press this month, Baird denounced Russia's controversial new anti-gay law as hateful, saying it could incite violence.
He has also spoken out in the past about the discrimination and violence against gays and singled out Uganda, which has its own anti-gay law.
The vice-president of REAL Women of Canada, Gwendolyn Landolt, said in a statement on the group's website that Baird's actions are "highly offensive'' to conservative taxpayers.
"Just who does John Baird think he is?'' asks Landolt while accusing Baird of using taxpayers' money to ''promote his own personal agenda and endeavouring to set standards of the laws of foreign countries.''
Landolt says while Baird argues that ''homosexual rights are a 'Canadian value,' this applies only to himself and his fellow activists and the left-wing elitists."
She adds that these are "not conservative values and that of grass roots Canadians.''
Baird told The Canadian Press on Aug. 1 that he is deeply concerned that the new Russian law will be enforced during the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.
He called the law an "incitement to intolerance, which breeds hate. And intolerance and hate breed violence.''
