The Winnipeg Police Board is taking steps to better protect indigenous women and girls from violence.

A motion passed at Friday's meeting calls on the police service to strengthen activities targeted at solving cases of missing and murdered women and girls.

It said cultural and sensitivity training should be enhanced for officers. It said responses to violence within families and relationships, and support for victims of violence and exploitation, needs to be improved.

The plan does not outline a cost for the initiatives, but it calls for funds from within the police budget to be allocated to achieve the goals.

In September, city council tasked the police board to provide a proactive approach to prevent and solve these cases.
