In a second night of Bay Area demonstrations, protesters briefly shut down a state highway in Oakland and tried to loot a Radio Shack in Berkeley.
The demonstrators, protesting police shootings of unarmed black men in Missouri and New York, threw rocks and bottles late Sunday at California Highway Patrol officers who were trying to clear them from California 24, according to the CHP.
The crowd of 500 to 600 protesters gathered at 5 p.m. at the edge of the UC Berkeley campus and marched through downtown. At one point, some of the demonstrators smashed the window of a Radio Shack. When a man in the crowd tried to stop them, he was struck by a hammer, Berkeley police said.
A group of demonstrators then tried to close a highway in Oakland. Protesters hurled an explosive and vandalized two patrol cars, according to tweets by the CHP.
Highway patrol officers responded with tear gas and reported making at least one arrest.
The previous night, three officers were hurt and six people arrested when a protest turned unruly in Berkeley.
Scores of law officers from several surrounding agencies joined the Berkeley Police Department on Saturday night to quell unrest that went on for hours.
Berkeley Police Officer Jennifer Coats said demonstrators threw wrenches, smoke grenades and other objects at officers, and some squad cars were damaged, according to the Associated Press.
