Remembering a remarkable mom and friend - Winnipeg Sun

Family and friends of Lisa Mitchell remember her as an artistic and loving person despite a tragic turn in the case of her disappearance.

Mitchell was last seen in October of 2012 and on Saturday, her common-law husband was charged with murder after police found what they believe to be human remains in the Ogden home where he and her two children lived.

"This is not what we were hoping for," said Mitchell's cousin, Randal Mitchell.

"I don't know how you deal with something like this."

He said Lisa was a talented artist — he recalled her drawing and doodling throughout her childhood — and a "bit of a geek" who was into Anime and loved music.

The cousins were born into a large extended family, said Randal. "Family was a big thing for us," he said, adding Lisa shared that love with her own two children.

"Anything she could do for those kids she did."

Erin Marchetto met Lisa in junior high school and the two forged a long-lasting friendship.

In high school, they started a dance troupe called Just Cuz, with a few of their girlfriends.

Each of the girls had a nickname.

Lisa was named 'Major' after the Major Mitchell's cockatoo, which her friends thought was a perfect symbol of her colourful personality.

The group went to a studio to have a troupe photo taken and though it became harder to keep in touch after high school, they reunited once a year to catch up and have a new photo taken.

They ended up with a decade's worth of annual portraits — now especially precious memories for Marchetto.

"It wouldn't matter what happened in our lives, we'd use that time to re-group and come together again," she said.

She's hoping to get the group members together after Christmas this year to have a photo taken again in memory of Lisa.

"(Losing her) wasn't just losing a friend, it was losing a sister," she said.

Meanwhile, curiosity turned to disbelief for Ogden residents who live on the same street as the home where investigators believed they found human remains.

"I was absolutely shocked," said Rebecca Davis, who lives across the street.

"I felt sick to my stomach."

Napane Penny said hearing the news was surreal.

"It has shaken the community," said Penny, who described the situation like "something out of a horror movie. I had a hard time getting to sleep (last night), as tired as I was."

Allan Shyback is charged with second-degree murder and indignity to a body.

His first court date is scheduled for Monday.
