CALGARY — Family of the man at the centre of a southeastern B.C. manhunt say it was always suspected he would wind up on the news one day.
As the search for 45-year-old Peter Degroot entered its third day in Slocan, B.C., Saturday, a family member claimed an aneurysm sustained by the man in his mid-20s set off years of paranoia, threats and erratic behaviour.
Speaking to QMI Agency under the condition of anonymity over to safety concerns, a relative of Degroot said he made an eerily prophetic comment to police after being the subject of disturbing threats.
"I told the police that I wouldn't be surprised, in the next while, to turn on the TV and see his face," the family member said.
Degroot is accused of opening fire on police Thursday in the tiny B.C. village of Slocan, about 600 km southwest of Calgary.
His escape into the surrounding bush prompted police to lock down the village and conduct a massive search for the suspect.
The relative refuted Degroot's claims of suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder after returning from fighting in Afghanistan, saying he was never in the military.
