OTTAWA — Dozens of skiers at Mont Ste-Marie resort in Quebec were forced to take a surprise route down the hill Saturday after one of its three chairlifts broke down and they had to be rescued.
It took close to four hours to lower skiers from the Vanier Express chairlift, one of three at the hill in the Gatineau mountains about 90 km northeast of Ottawa.
"It seems like it was done very well. They got it done as quickly as they could," Griffith Slaughter, a 36-year-old ski instructor from Pembroke, Ont., who was at the hill for a day of skiing with his young sons, said.
Slaughter said hill staff were throwing blankets and jackets up to the stranded skiers to help them stay warm while they waited for a specialized evacuation unit to work its way along the lift's cable and lower skiers one at a time.
According to the Weather Network, it was -12C with the windchill on the hill.
The breakdown occurred around noon Saturday.
"One of our chairlifts has stopped and as a precaution we are getting people off the lift right away," ski hill management posted on Twitter at approximately 2:15 p.m. Saturday.
About 100 skiers were stranded on the lift, according to a skier's Twitter post.
