Caledon remained under a freezing rain alert late Saturday night with Environment Canada warning that the precipitation could persist through much of the overnight.
The agency says that up to 10 mm of ice could build up in some places, making any flat surface potentially hazardous. Environment Canada says highways, roads and parking lots will likely be very slippery throughout the overnight and into Sunday morning.
It has also warned that ice could build up on tree branches, causing some to snap.
The freezing rain is being created by a low pressure system that is tracking slowly across much of southern Ontario and will likely create precipitation for much of the weekend. It has already dumped snow across much of the GTA Saturday afternoon.
Temperatures are expected to rise on Sunday morning, which will bring an end to the freezing rain, but the mild period will only persist for a short time before a cold front moves in bringing with it very low temperatures.
An extreme cold alert has already been issued for some parts of southwestern Ontario for the coming week and temperatures in Caledon are also expected to be bitter, with a high on Wednesday of just minus 11C.
